iPhones hold their value extremely well — but that also means they’re the most frequently faked, stolen, and misrepresented gadgets in the second-hand market. This guide gives you the complete playbook for buying safely.

Which iPhone Model to Buy in 2026?

  • iPhone 14 / 14 Pro: Excellent choice. A17 Bionic (Pro) / A15 Bionic. Will receive iOS updates until ~2028-2029. Dynamic Island on Pro models. Crash detection, Emergency SOS via satellite.
  • iPhone 13 / 13 Pro: Still very capable. A15 chip is excellent. ProMotion 120Hz on Pro. Will be supported for several more years.
  • iPhone 12: A14 chip still handles everything well. 5G support. Getting slightly dated for power users but fine for everyday use.
  • iPhone 11: Avoid unless the price is extremely compelling. Limited to Face ID (no Touch ID), older camera system, will lose iOS support in the next 1-2 update cycles.

The iCloud Activation Lock: Most Important Check

Apple’s Activation Lock means a stolen iPhone is essentially useless — unless the previous owner removes their Apple ID. This is great for theft deterrence; bad if you accidentally buy a phone that’s still linked to someone else’s account.

How to check before buying: Ask the seller for the serial number or IMEI. Go to checkcoverage.apple.com. Enter the serial number. If it shows “Valid Purchase Date” — it’s a legitimate Apple device with a known history.

At setup: The phone should NOT ask for someone else’s Apple ID. If it does — the previous owner didn’t sign out. Return it immediately.

Battery Health for iPhone

Go to: Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging → Maximum Capacity

  • 95–100%: Excellent (essentially new)
  • 85–94%: Good (comfortable for 1–2 more years)
  • 80–84%: Acceptable (Apple considers 80% “end of optimal performance”)
  • Below 80%: Plan to replace battery (~₹2,500–4,000 at Apple service centre)

At NewAsNew, all iPhones are listed with battery health above 85%.

Check Parts & Service History

Settings → General → About → Scroll to “Parts and Service History”

This tells you if any components were replaced. A “Genuine Apple Part” status for the screen, battery, camera, etc. is ideal. Non-genuine parts show a warning — budget for potential future compatibility issues.

What to Test Physically

  • Face ID — unlock multiple times
  • All cameras — front, rear, video
  • Speakers — test both earpiece and bottom speaker
  • Microphone — record a voice memo
  • Cellular — make a call, send an SMS
  • WiFi and Bluetooth
  • Lightning/USB-C port — charge and data transfer
  • Home button / Touch ID (older models)
  • All side buttons — volume, mute, power
  • 3D Touch / Haptic Touch response

Indian Variants vs Global Variants

Buy Indian variants (A2xxx model numbers for Indian market). Global variants may have different 5G band support which can affect connectivity on Indian networks. Check the model number in Settings → General → About.
