If you’ve ever tried to buy a phone or laptop at less than full price, you’ve probably seen these three terms: Unboxed, Refurbished, and Grade A. They’re often used interchangeably — but they mean very different things. Buying the wrong type can leave you with a product that doesn’t match your expectations.
Let’s clear this up once and for all.
What Does “Unboxed” Mean?
An unboxed gadget is a product that was sold and shipped — but the buyer returned it, often within 24–48 hours, usually without ever using it. Think: someone ordered a MacBook, changed their mind, returned it. Or a store display unit that was used for 2 weeks just to sit on a shelf.
The key point: it was never actually used. No one typed on the keyboard. No one dropped it. It just had the box opened.
What you get:
- Product in 100% condition — visually identical to new
- All original accessories (charger, cable, manuals, box)
- Original brand warranty still active
- Sometimes the factory plastic films are still intact
What you save: Typically 15–30% off the current retail price — purely because the seal was broken.
What Does “Refurbished” Mean?
This is where the term gets murky. “Refurbished” can mean very different things depending on who says it:
- Manufacturer refurbished: The brand itself repaired and recertified the device. Apple’s Certified Refurbished program is a good example. Trustworthy.
- Seller refurbished: A third-party repaired it, with varying quality controls. This is where you need to be careful — some sellers are thorough, others are not.
The word “refurbished” does NOT guarantee condition, warranty, or who did the work. Always check who’s behind the certification.
What Does “Grade A” Mean?
Grade A is a condition rating for used products. It means the device:
- Has been owned and used by someone before
- Is in excellent cosmetic condition (95–99%)
- Has passed a thorough quality check
- Is fully functional with no defects
At NewAsNew, Grade A means only 2 in 10 submitted devices pass our QC. A Grade A device may have a micro-scratch if you look under a bright light at an angle — but you’d never notice it in normal use.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Feature | Unboxed | Grade A | Generic Refurbished |
|---|---|---|---|
| Previously used? | No | Yes (briefly) | Yes |
| Condition | 100% | 95–99% | Varies |
| Original box | Yes | Usually no | No |
| Brand warranty | Yes | No | Depends |
| Savings vs new | 15–30% | 30–60% | 20–70% |
| QC certainty | High | High (if certified) | Varies widely |
Which Should You Buy?
Buy Unboxed if: You want something that feels brand-new, you want the original brand warranty, and you’re saving 20–30%.
Buy Grade A if: You want maximum savings (up to 50–60%), you don’t mind it being pre-owned, and you trust the QC process behind it.
Be cautious with generic “Refurbished”: Only buy from sellers with a documented, transparent QC process. Ask specifically: who did the QC, what did they check, what warranty is included?
