Short answer: Upgrading is still the right call if your laptop is 8th Gen Intel or newer, has a healthy battery and only needs one part. It stopped being the automatic answer in 2026, because the parts themselves are what got expensive — industry trackers reported DDR5 up roughly 110% and NAND flash up 85-90% in the first quarter of the year. If your machine needs RAM and a drive and a battery, the total often lands close to a Grade A Certified Dell Latitude 5400 Core i7 at Rs 22,490, which arrives sorted.

Start with one question: is the base machine worth improving?
Upgrading a laptop that is fundamentally past it is the most common money mistake we see. Run this check first.
| Check | Upgrade is sensible | Replace instead |
|---|---|---|
| Processor generation | Intel 8th Gen or newer | 7th Gen or older |
| Windows 11 eligibility | Eligible | Not eligible |
| Battery health | Above 70% | Below 60%, or swelling |
| Screen and hinges | Sound | Cracked, flickering, loose |
| Keyboard and trackpad | Working | Dead keys, failing trackpad |
| Thermals | Fans quiet, no throttling | Constant fan noise, shutdowns |
Windows 11 requires 8th Gen Intel or newer. If your laptop is 7th Gen or older, no amount of RAM changes that, and putting money into it is putting money into a machine with a shrinking future.
What the upgrades cost, roughly, in 2026
We are not going to quote exact retail prices — they move weekly in this market, which is the whole point of the article. What is stable is the shape of the decision:
- A single RAM stick to go from 8GB to 16GB — the cheapest useful upgrade, and the one hit hardest by 2026 pricing.
- A 512GB NVMe SSD — the second cheapest, and also substantially more expensive than in 2024.
- A replacement battery — often the most expensive single item on an older business laptop, and the one people forget.
- Labour, if you are not doing it yourself. Straightforward on business laptops, fiddly on thin consumer ones.
Get live quotes for your exact model before deciding. The point of this article is the framework, not a number that will be wrong next month.
The three cases where upgrading clearly wins
- One part, good machine. A 10th or 11th Gen laptop with a healthy battery that just needs 8GB more RAM. Clear yes. Nothing else you could buy for that money improves your day as much.
- You are out of storage and nothing else. Adding a second drive into a free M.2 slot, if your model has one, is the cheapest capacity you will ever buy.
- Sentimental or specific hardware. A keyboard you love, a screen that suits your eyes, software licensed to that machine. These are real reasons and worth paying for.
The three cases where buying wins
- The machine needs three things. RAM plus drive plus battery on a 2018 laptop frequently totals close to what a checked, warrantied Grade A Certified unit costs — and the upgraded machine still has an old chassis, old hinges and no warranty.
- The RAM is soldered. Common on thin ultrabooks and universal on Apple silicon MacBooks. There is no upgrade path; the decision is made for you.
- You need it working tomorrow. Sourcing parts, booking labour and reinstalling Windows takes days. A laptop that arrives working is worth something in itself.

Each arrives through the 50-point check with a 6-month NewAsNew Assured Warranty, 7-day returns and a GST invoice. That warranty is a real part of the comparison — a DIY upgrade voids nothing but also guarantees nothing.
Who should NOT buy a replacement laptop
- Anyone whose current machine only needs one part. Buy the part. It is the better use of money and we would rather say so.
- Anyone with a 12th Gen or newer laptop. Your machine is newer than most of what we sell. Upgrade it.
- Anyone whose real problem is software. A clean Windows install fixes more laptops than new hardware does, and costs nothing. Try that first.
- Anyone whose laptop is slow because of dust. A blocked fan causes thermal throttling that looks exactly like an old, weak processor. A cleaning is cheap.

Frequently asked questions
Is upgrading RAM cheaper than buying a new laptop in 2026?
Usually still yes for a single upgrade, but the margin narrowed sharply this year because memory prices roughly doubled. Once a machine needs RAM, storage and a battery together, the totals converge.
Can I upgrade RAM on any laptop?
No. Many thin ultrabooks solder their memory, and all Apple silicon MacBooks use unified memory that cannot be changed. Business-series laptops such as the Dell Latitude and HP EliteBook usually have accessible SODIMM slots.
Will upgrading RAM void my warranty?
On most business laptops, no — memory and storage are designed to be user-serviceable. Check your specific manufacturer terms before opening the machine.
How do I know if my laptop has a free RAM slot?
Windows Task Manager, Performance tab, Memory. It shows Slots used, for example 1 of 2. If a slot is free, you can add a stick rather than replacing one.
Is it worth upgrading a 7th Gen Intel laptop?
Generally no. 7th Gen is not eligible for Windows 11, which limits its future regardless of how much RAM you add. Put the money towards a machine that is.
Do NewAsNew laptops come with upgraded RAM?
It varies by unit. Configuration is recorded during our 50-point check and listed on the product page. Because module prices are high in 2026, we increasingly prefer to source units that already carry the memory they need rather than upgrade them afterwards — and we would rather explain that than hide it.
