Short answer: Read an Intel laptop chip name in four parts. Take i5-1145G7: i5 is the tier, 11 is the generation, 45 is the position within that generation, and G7 is the integrated graphics level. The suffix letter is the part most buyers ignore and the part that matters most — a 15W U-series chip and a 45W H-series chip with the same i7 badge are very different machines. The Dell Latitude 5421 at Rs 39,990 uses an 11th Gen H-series i7; the HP EliteBook 840 G8 at Rs 32,990 uses an 11th Gen U-series i5. Both are good. They are good at different things.

The four parts of the name

Part Example Means
Tier i3, i5, i7, i9 Rough capability class within a generation
Generation 8, 10, 11 (first digits after the dash) Which architecture year
SKU number 45, 65, 85 Position within that generation. Higher is faster.
Suffix U, P, H, HK, G7 Power envelope and graphics. The most important part.

So i7-8650U is an 8th generation Core i7, high in its range, in a 15W low-power package. And i7-11850H is an 11th generation Core i7, high in its range, in a 45W high-performance package.

The suffix, explained properly

Suffix Power What it means in practice
Y ~5-9W Fanless ultraportables. Weak sustained performance.
U ~15W The mainstream business laptop chip. Great battery, good burst speed, limited sustained load.
P ~28W Middle ground introduced in 12th Gen. More sustained headroom than U.
H ~45W Workstation and gaming laptops. Holds high speed under long loads. Louder, hotter, shorter battery.
HK / HX 45W+ Unlocked or desktop-derived. Most performance, least battery.
G1 to G7 – Integrated graphics level on 10th and 11th Gen. G7 is Iris Xe.

The practical rule: for a short burst — opening an app, loading a spreadsheet — a U-series chip feels almost as fast as an H-series one. For a long load — exporting video, compiling code, running a long simulation — the H-series pulls away and stays ahead, because it can sustain higher clocks without hitting its thermal and power ceiling.

Why an i5 can beat an i7

Because the badge only ranks chips within a generation. An 11th Gen Core i5 is newer, more efficient and often faster in real work than an 8th Gen Core i7, despite the lower tier.

The reliable order of importance when comparing two laptops:

  1. Generation first. Newer beats older, almost always.
  2. Suffix second. H beats P beats U for sustained work; U beats them for battery.
  3. Tier third. i7 over i5 within the same generation and suffix.
  4. SKU number last. Small differences.

What about the G7 part?

On 10th and 11th Gen chips, the G number describes integrated graphics. G1 through G4 are basic UHD graphics; G7 is Intel Iris Xe, which is substantially more capable and makes light gaming and GPU-accelerated video preview genuinely usable.

One thing worth flagging because it catches people out: Iris Xe is on the 11th Gen U-series, not the H-series. The 45W H-series 11th Gen chips, including the one in the Latitude 5421, use older UHD graphics. So the more powerful processor has the weaker integrated graphics. If graphics matter and you have no dedicated GPU, an 11th Gen U-series with G7 may serve you better than an H-series.

What about Core Ultra?

From late 2023 Intel changed naming for its newest chips to Core Ultra 5, 7 and 9, dropping the i. These are much newer than anything in the refurbished business market and you will mostly meet them on new laptops. If you see one on a used listing, it is a recent machine.

How this maps to what we stock

Model Chip type Price Good at
Dell Latitude 5400 / 7490 8th Gen U-series Rs 22,490 Documents, classes, browsing, battery life
Dell Latitude 7400 i7 8th Gen U-series Rs 24,490 Same, with more headroom, thinner body
HP EliteBook 830 G8 10th Gen U-series Rs 32,990 Compact daily work machine
HP EliteBook 840 G8 i5 11th Gen U-series with Iris Xe Rs 32,990 Best integrated graphics in our range at this price
Dell Latitude 5421 i7 11th Gen H-series Rs 39,990 Sustained heavy load; weaker integrated graphics
Dell Precision 3551 / 5550 10th Gen H-series Rs 48,490-48,990 Workstation tasks, dedicated graphics

Who should NOT buy an H-series laptop

  • Anyone who values battery life. A 45W chip drains a battery far faster than a 15W one, and runs the fans harder.
  • Anyone doing office work. U-series is designed exactly for this and does it with less heat and noise.
  • Anyone who works in quiet spaces. H-series fans are audible under load.
  • Anyone who needs good integrated graphics on 11th Gen. Take the U-series with Iris Xe instead.

Frequently asked questions

What does the U in i5-1145G7 or i7-8650U mean?

U indicates a roughly 15W low-power design, used in mainstream business and ultraportable laptops. It prioritises battery life and cool, quiet running over sustained maximum performance.

Is H-series better than U-series?

For sustained heavy work such as video export or long compiles, yes. For battery life, quietness and everyday office use, U-series is better. Neither is universally superior.

Is an 11th Gen i5 better than an 8th Gen i7?

In most real workloads, yes. Generation usually matters more than tier. The 11th Gen also brings Iris Xe graphics on U-series chips, which is a large improvement over 8th Gen UHD.

What does G7 mean in an Intel processor name?

It indicates the integrated graphics level on 10th and 11th Gen chips. G7 is Intel Iris Xe, the strongest integrated option in that range. G1 to G4 are basic UHD graphics.

Which Intel generation is minimum for Windows 11?

8th Gen. Intel 7th Gen and older are not on Microsoft supported processor list for Windows 11, which is a key reason we do not stock them.

Does a higher SKU number always mean faster?

Within the same generation and suffix, generally yes — an i5-1145G7 sits above an i5-1135G7. Across generations or suffixes the number tells you nothing useful on its own.
