Short answer: Laptop battery health is full-charge capacity divided by design capacity — how much charge the battery can still hold against how much it held when new. At 80% health, a laptop that genuinely ran 5 hours when new will run roughly 4 hours. Cycle count matters more than age. Every NewAsNew laptop, including the Dell Latitude 5490 Core i5 at ₹23,490, carries a measured health band on its listing rather than a claim of new-battery life.

What the percentage actually measures
Design capacity is what the cells were rated to hold when they left the factory, measured in milliwatt-hours (mWh). It never changes. It is a fixed property of the battery, printed into its firmware.
Full charge capacity is what the same battery can hold today, after however many charges it has been through. It only ever goes down.
Battery health is full charge capacity divided by design capacity, expressed as a percentage. A battery with a design capacity of 60,000 mWh that now holds 48,000 mWh is at 80% health. That is the whole calculation. There is no room in it for a seller to be creative, which is why you should not accept “the battery is good” from anyone.
One important consequence: the percentage is a capacity measurement, not a time measurement. It does not tell you hours. It tells you what fraction of the original hours you still have.
What 80% actually feels like, day to day
Runtime scales roughly in proportion to capacity, so the arithmetic is simple once you are honest about the starting point — and that is not the spec sheet. A business laptop rated at “up to 10 hours” realistically delivered five to six hours of genuine mixed use when new.
Work from that real figure, not the marketing one:
| Stated health | What it usually means | Real runtime if the machine truly gave 5 hours when new |
|---|---|---|
| 95–100% | Nearly unused, or a replaced battery | About 4 hours 45 minutes to 5 hours |
| 85–94% | Light corporate use, mostly docked at a desk | About 4 hours 15 minutes to 4 hours 40 minutes |
| 80–84% | Normal for a three-year fleet machine | About 4 to 4 hours 15 minutes |
| 70–79% | Usable, but plan your day around a socket | About 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours |
| Below 70% | Budget for a replacement | Under 3 hours 30 minutes |
So 80% is not a warning sign. It is what a well-treated three-year-old corporate laptop looks like, and it costs you roughly one hour against new. Whether that hour matters is a question about your day, not about the laptop.
Why cycle count matters more than age
A charge cycle is one full discharge worth of use — not one plug-in. Charging from 60% to 100% four times equals roughly one cycle, not four. Manufacturers generally rate laptop cells to retain around 80% of design capacity after a few hundred full cycles, so cycle count is the single best predictor of remaining life. Two identical Latitude 5490s, both made in 2018:
- Unit A sat docked in an office, plugged in almost permanently, opened at a desk. Roughly 120 cycles in three years. It may still read 88% health.
- Unit B belonged to a field sales executive who ran it flat twice a day. Roughly 900 cycles in the same three years. It may read 62%.
Same model, same year, same spec sheet, wildly different batteries. This is precisely why age alone is a useless proxy and why we measure each unit individually as part of the 50-point quality check rather than assuming a figure by model.
Calendar ageing matters too — cells lose some capacity even unused, faster if stored hot, which is a real consideration in Indian summers. But between two machines of the same age, cycle count explains most of the difference.
How to read the Windows battery report yourself
You need no software for this. Windows has it built in and it takes about sixty seconds. Do it on any laptop before you pay, including one you buy from us.
- Press the Windows key, type cmd, and open Command Prompt.
- Type powercfg /batteryreport and press Enter.
- Windows saves an HTML file and prints the path, usually in your user folder. Open that file in any browser.
- Scroll to the Installed batteries section at the top.
- Read two lines: DESIGN CAPACITY and FULL CHARGE CAPACITY. Divide the second by the first.
- Scroll further to Battery capacity history to see the decline over time, and to Cycle count if your model reports it.
Two honest notes. Some laptops do not report cycle count to Windows and the field shows blank — a firmware limitation, not a hidden problem. On Dell machines you can cross-check in BIOS setup (press F2 at startup).

What a replacement battery costs in India
This is the part that changes the whole calculation, and most buyers do not know it.
A replacement battery for a Dell Latitude costs approximately ₹2,500 to ₹3,500 in the Indian market, depending on the model, the capacity and whether you buy an original Dell part or a reputable compatible cell. Treat that as an approximate range, not a quotation — prices vary by city and by seller, and it is worth confirming before you commit.
Fitting is simple on business-series machines: a handful of standard screws, and the service manual is published free. Any Nehru Place or SP Road technician will do it in fifteen minutes.
So the honest way to think about it: a laptop at ₹23,490 with a battery at 78% health is, if runtime matters to you, a ₹26,000 to ₹27,000 laptop with a new battery. Compare against your alternatives using that number, not the sticker. In most cases it still wins comfortably.
What NewAsNew states, and what we will not claim
We state a measured battery health band on every laptop listing — a band, not a decimal figure, because readings move by a point or two with temperature and recent charge cycles.
What we will not do is claim new-battery life on a used machine. If a seller tells you a four-year-old corporate laptop gives eight hours, they have not measured it.
- Batteries are excluded from our warranty, as they are from essentially every laptop warranty in the market including brand-new ones, because a battery is a consumable that wears with use rather than a component that fails. What is covered is set out in our warranty guide.
- Unboxed units are different. An Unboxed laptop has never been used, so its battery is effectively new and still carries remaining original brand warranty. If battery life is your first priority, look at Unboxed laptops rather than Grade A.
Who should not buy a laptop with a used battery
Directly, because this is where people get disappointed:
- You genuinely work unplugged for five or more hours a day. Field sales, site work, long train commutes, all-day lectures with no socket. Either buy Unboxed, or budget the replacement battery into the purchase from day one.
- You cannot tolerate any uncertainty. A used battery is the one component on a refurbished laptop that will keep declining. Everything else is stable. If that bothers you, this is a real reason to buy new.
Everybody else — desk workers, students who charge between classes, anyone who carries a charger anyway — is trading roughly one hour of runtime for a Core i5 in a metal chassis instead of a Celeron in a plastic one. That is a good trade, and the whole argument for business-series refurbished laptops.

Frequently asked questions
What does laptop battery health percentage mean?
Battery health percentage is the battery’s current full-charge capacity divided by its original design capacity. A battery designed to hold 60,000 mWh that now holds 48,000 mWh is at 80% health. It measures how much charge the battery can still store, not how many hours it will run, so you convert it to hours by taking that fraction of the machine’s real original runtime.
Is 80% battery health good for a refurbished laptop?
Yes, 80% is a normal and acceptable figure for a three-year-old business laptop coming off a corporate lease. In practical terms it costs you around one hour against new — roughly four hours of mixed use instead of five. It is only a problem if you regularly work for long stretches away from a power socket, in which case budget ₹2,500 to ₹3,500 for a replacement.
How do I check laptop battery health in Windows?
Open Command Prompt, type powercfg /batteryreport and press Enter. Windows writes an HTML file and tells you where it saved it. Open that file in a browser and look at the Installed batteries section for DESIGN CAPACITY and FULL CHARGE CAPACITY, then divide the second by the first. The same report also shows capacity decline over time and, on most models, the cycle count.
Does battery cycle count matter more than laptop age?
Yes. A charge cycle is one full discharge worth of use, not one plug-in, and cycle count is the best available predictor of how much life a battery has left. Two identical laptops made in the same year can differ by 25 percentage points of health depending on whether the previous user sat docked at a desk or ran the machine flat twice a day.
How much does a laptop battery replacement cost in India?
Roughly ₹2,500 to ₹3,500 for a Dell Latitude, depending on the exact model, the capacity and whether you choose an original or a reputable compatible cell. Treat that as an approximate range and confirm locally before buying. Fitting is straightforward on business-series machines because the service manual is published free and the parts are widely stocked in India.
Is the battery covered under a refurbished laptop warranty?
No. Batteries are excluded from our 6-month NewAsNew Assured warranty, and they are excluded from essentially every laptop warranty in the market including those on brand-new machines, because a battery is a consumable that wears with normal use. This is why we state the measured health band on the listing before you buy rather than leaving it to be discovered later.
The honest bottom line
Battery health is the one number on a refurbished laptop listing that a seller cannot fudge, because it comes straight out of the battery’s own firmware. Ask for it. If you get an adjective instead of a number, walk away.
Then do the arithmetic: take the machine’s real new runtime, multiply by the health percentage, and ask whether that fits your day. If it does not, add ₹3,000 for a battery and ask again — usually it still works out.
