Short answer: Yes, both were previously owned — anyone telling you otherwise is managing your feelings rather than answering your question. The difference is what happened in between. A second-hand device goes from one owner to the next unchanged and unchecked. A properly refurbished device is tested, restored, graded, warrantied and invoiced. The catch, and it is a real one: India has no legal standard for the word refurbished, so the label alone guarantees nothing. What guarantees something is the specific answers a seller gives to five questions.

What actually differs
| Second-hand | Refurbished (done properly) | |
|---|---|---|
| Previously owned | Yes | Yes |
| Tested before sale | No | Yes, against a defined checklist |
| Faults repaired | No | Yes, or the unit is rejected |
| Battery health measured | Rarely | Yes, and stated as a number |
| Data wiped properly | Usually not verified | Yes, and verified |
| Graded condition | Described by the seller | Assigned against defined criteria |
| Warranty | None | Yes |
| Returns | None | Yes |
| GST invoice | No | Yes |
| Who you chase if it fails | A stranger who has stopped replying | A registered company |
The uncomfortable part
There is no legal definition of refurbished in India for consumer electronics, and no mandatory grading standard. That means:
- A seller can call a wiped, unrepaired phone refurbished without breaking any rule.
- Grade A from one seller and Grade A from another can mean genuinely different conditions.
- Warranty from a registered company and warranty from an anonymous marketplace account are legally very different things, even when both say six months.
So the honest position is not that refurbished is better than second-hand. It is that a real refurbishment process is better than no process, and the word on the listing does not tell you which you are getting.
The five questions that separate the two
- What exactly did you check, and can I see the list? A real process has a written checklist. Ours is 50 points, grouped into test areas by device type — 14 for laptops, 14 for smartphones, 12 for earbuds and headphones, and so on.
- What is the battery health, as a percentage? A number is a fact. Good battery is an adjective. This single question filters out most resellers.
- Who issues the warranty, and what is their GST number? A warranty is only as real as the entity behind it. Ours is issued by NextG Serve Private Limited, GSTIN 07AAJCN6632K1Z3, CIN U46524DL2024PTC432186.
- What is your rejection rate? A seller who rejects nothing is not inspecting anything. Only 2 to 3 out of every 10 devices that reach our bench pass; the other 7 to 8 go back to the supplier. We publish that as a range rather than one flattering number, because the true figure moves month to month with the stock we are offered.
- Do I get a GST invoice? Without one there is no warranty claim, no return and no recourse. This is the question that matters most and gets asked least.
When second-hand is genuinely the right choice
We would rather say this than pretend otherwise.
- You know the seller personally and know how the device was treated.
- You can test it thoroughly in person and you know what to test.
- The price difference is large and you are comfortable carrying the entire risk.
- You can repair things yourself and are effectively buying parts.
- It is a low-stakes secondary device that would not disrupt your life if it failed.
In those situations second-hand is not a worse decision. It is a different allocation of risk, made knowingly.
When it is a bad idea
- It is your primary work or study machine. Downtime costs more than the saving.
- You handle banking or client data on it. Unknown history is a real risk.
- You cannot inspect it in person before paying. Photographs prove nothing about a battery or a hinge.
- You are buying in the weeks after a flagship launch. This is when the largest volume of unchecked stock enters the Indian market.
- The saving is under 15%. At that gap you are giving up a warranty, returns and an invoice for very little.
What Grade A Certified means here, specifically
Previously owned, tested against the 50-point check, restored to full function, with only minor cosmetic marks. Not factory-new, and we do not describe it that way. Unboxed is a separate category and means the sealed retail box was opened — a return, display unit or overstock — with the product itself essentially unused.
Every unit in either category carries a 6-month NewAsNew Assured Warranty, plus any remaining brand warranty on Unboxed units, 7-day returns, a GST invoice and no-cost or low-cost EMI.
What we can ship today
Every unit below is in stock as this page was last checked, with a 6-month NewAsNew Assured Warranty, GST invoice, 7-day returns and no-cost EMI. If it is listed here, we can dispatch it.

Frequently asked questions
Is refurbished the same as second-hand?
Both were previously owned, so in that narrow sense yes. What differs is the process in between — testing, repair, grading, data wiping, warranty and invoicing. Without that process, refurbished is just a word on a listing.
Is there a legal standard for refurbished in India?
Not for consumer electronics grading. There is no mandated definition or grading scale, which is why two sellers Grade A can mean different things. Ask what the grade means in that seller own words.
Is refurbished safe to buy in India?
From a seller who publishes a checklist, states battery health as a number, issues a GST invoice and can be identified by GST and CIN, yes. From an anonymous listing with no warranty, the risk is entirely yours.
Why is refurbished more expensive than second-hand?
Because testing, repair, warranty provision and returns cost money, and because a large share of units are rejected rather than sold. Roughly 7 to 8 of every 10 devices we are offered never reach the shelf, and that cost is real.
Can I return a refurbished device if I do not like it?
With us, yes, within 7 days. Second-hand purchases from individuals typically have no return option at all.
What happens to the devices you reject?
They go back to the supplier. We do not downgrade a failed unit and sell it at a lower grade, because that would make the grading meaningless.
