Short answer: Integrated graphics are built into the processor and share your system RAM. A dedicated GPU has its own processor and its own memory. For documents, browsing, video calls, Tally, Photoshop on normal files and 1080p video editing, modern integrated graphics — particularly Intel Iris Xe, found in the HP EliteBook 840 G8 at Rs 32,990 — are genuinely enough. You need a dedicated GPU for serious gaming, 3D, AI work and heavy video. Everyone else is buying battery drain and fan noise.

What is actually different

Integrated graphics Dedicated GPU
Where it lives Inside the CPU package A separate chip on the mainboard
Memory Borrows system RAM Its own dedicated VRAM
Power draw Low High
Heat and noise Minimal Significant under load
Battery impact Small Large
Laptop weight Lighter Heavier, needs more cooling
Cost Included A large share of the price

The part that surprises people: RAM speed becomes graphics performance

Because integrated graphics have no memory of their own, they use your system RAM. That means memory bandwidth directly determines graphics performance.

Two practical consequences on a laptop without a dedicated GPU:

  • Dual channel matters enormously. Two RAM sticks roughly double available bandwidth compared with one. On integrated graphics that can mean a 20-40% difference in frame rates and in GPU-accelerated tasks. Many laptops ship with a single stick and a free slot; adding a second is the cheapest graphics upgrade that exists.
  • RAM speed matters more than usual. DDR4-3200 over DDR4-2400 is a real gain here, where in ordinary office work it is barely measurable.

Check yours in Task Manager, Performance, Memory. If Slots used says 1 of 2, you have free performance sitting unclaimed.

How good is integrated graphics in 2026?

Graphics Found on Realistically handles
Intel UHD 620 8th Gen U-series Office, video playback, very light editing
Intel UHD (10th Gen) 10th Gen U-series Same, slightly better
Intel Iris Xe 11th Gen U-series 1080p editing, light gaming, GPU-accelerated preview
Intel UHD (11th Gen H) 11th Gen H-series Weaker than Iris Xe despite the faster CPU
Apple M-series MacBook Air M3 Serious video work without a discrete GPU

Note the fourth row again, because it catches people out. Intel Iris Xe appears on 11th Gen U-series chips. The 45W H-series 11th Gen parts use older UHD graphics. So the Latitude 5421 at Rs 39,990 has a more powerful processor and weaker integrated graphics than the EliteBook 840 G8 at Rs 32,990. If graphics matter to you and you are not buying a discrete GPU, that is worth knowing.

Who genuinely needs a dedicated GPU

  • Gamers. Anything beyond light or older titles at reduced settings.
  • 3D and CAD users. SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Blender, Fusion 360.
  • Video editors working above 1080p, or with multiple streams and heavy effects.
  • Anyone training or running local AI models. VRAM capacity is the binding constraint here.
  • Anyone driving three or more external monitors, depending on the setup.

Who does not

  • Students, office and WFH users. Documents, spreadsheets, browsers, Teams, Zoom, Tally. Integrated is comfortably enough.
  • Programmers. Compilation is a CPU and RAM job. A GPU sits idle.
  • Photo editors on normal-sized files. Lightroom and Photoshop run well on Iris Xe.
  • Anyone editing 1080p video occasionally. Iris Xe handles it.
  • Anyone who values battery life and a quiet machine. This is the real trade you are making.

Who should NOT buy a laptop from us for graphics work

We would rather lose the sale than have you disappointed. If you need a current RTX-class GPU for gaming, AI training or 4K video, no refurbished business laptop in the Rs 22,000-50,000 range replaces it. The Precision 3551 and 5550 carry workstation-class graphics and are genuinely capable machines, but they are not current gaming GPUs and we will not pretend otherwise. Buy new, or buy a desktop, which gives far more graphics performance per rupee.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a graphics card in a laptop for office work?

No. Integrated graphics handle documents, spreadsheets, browsers, video calls and video playback comfortably. A dedicated GPU adds cost, weight, heat and battery drain for no benefit in that work.

Is Intel Iris Xe good enough for video editing?

For 1080p editing and moderate projects, yes. For 4K timelines, heavy effects or multi-stream work, you want a dedicated GPU.

Why does RAM affect graphics performance?

Integrated graphics have no memory of their own, so they use system RAM. More bandwidth means better graphics performance, which is why running two RAM sticks in dual channel makes a large difference on these machines.

Can I add a graphics card to a laptop?

Not internally. External GPU enclosures exist for laptops with Thunderbolt, but they are expensive and the performance is reduced by the connection. For most people it is not a sensible route.

Does a dedicated GPU drain battery even when idle?

Modern laptops switch to integrated graphics for light tasks and wake the dedicated GPU only when needed. Even so, a laptop with a discrete GPU generally has shorter battery life than an equivalent one without.

Which NewAsNew laptop has the best graphics for the money?

For integrated, the HP EliteBook 840 G8 Core i5 11th Gen at Rs 32,990 with Iris Xe. For dedicated workstation graphics, the Dell Precision 3551 at Rs 48,990 or the Precision 5550 at Rs 48,490.
