Short answer: DDR5 is genuinely faster, but for documents, browsing, Tally, Zoom and coding the real-world gain over DDR4-3200 is usually 5-10%, not double. In 2026 DDR5 modules also cost roughly twice what they did a year ago. That is why a DDR4 machine like the HP EliteBook 840 G8 Core i5 11th Gen at Rs 32,990 remains the better value buy for most Indian users, and why we say so plainly instead of upselling.

Diagram comparing a DDR4 SODIMM at 260 pins with a DDR5 SODIMM at 262 pins, showing the different notch positions and channel architecture
DDR4 and DDR5 laptop SODIMMs have their notch in different positions, so one physically cannot fit the other slot.

What is the actual difference between DDR4 and DDR5?

Both are system RAM — the fast, temporary memory your laptop works in. DDR5 is the newer standard. The changes are real but they are engineering changes, not magic.

DDR4 DDR5
Typical laptop speed 2400, 2666 or 3200 MT/s 4800, 5600 or 6400 MT/s
Operating voltage 1.2V 1.1V
Channels per module One 64-bit channel Two independent 32-bit sub-channels
Power management On the motherboard On the module itself (PMIC)
Error correction None on consumer modules On-die ECC built in
Laptop SODIMM pins 260-pin 262-pin, notch in a different place
2026 price situation Expensive, but far less so Roughly 110% higher than a year ago

The most practically important row is the last one but the most misunderstood row is the third. DDR5 splitting one module into two narrower sub-channels is why it handles many small simultaneous requests better than DDR4 — which is exactly what a modern operating system with thirty background processes does. It is a smarter design, not just a faster one.

Can I put DDR5 in a DDR4 laptop?

No. Not with an adapter, not with a BIOS update, not at all. A DDR4 laptop SODIMM has 260 pins and a DDR5 SODIMM has 262, and the notch sits in a different position specifically so you cannot force the wrong one in. The memory controller is inside the CPU, so the generation of RAM a laptop takes is decided by its processor and mainboard the day it was built.

This matters when you shop. If you buy a DDR4 laptop, its upgrade path is DDR4 forever. That is not a problem — DDR4 modules are still made and still available — but you should know it going in rather than discover it later.

Which laptops use which?

Processor generation Memory Example in our stock
Intel 8th Gen (2018) DDR4 Dell Latitude 5400 i7, Rs 22,490
Intel 10th Gen DDR4 HP EliteBook 830 G8 i5, Rs 32,990
Intel 11th Gen DDR4 or LPDDR4x HP EliteBook 840 G8 i5, Rs 32,990
Intel 12th Gen DDR4 or DDR5, depends on the model –
Intel 13th Gen and newer Mostly DDR5 or LPDDR5 –
Apple M-series Unified memory, soldered, not upgradeable MacBook Air M3, Rs 74,990 (Unboxed)

Almost everything in the refurbished business-laptop market in India today is DDR4. That is not a defect of the market — it is what corporate fleets bought in 2018-2021, and those fleets are the honest source of good refurbished stock.

Where does DDR5 genuinely win?

Three places, and it is worth being specific rather than vague.

  1. Integrated graphics. A laptop without a dedicated GPU borrows system RAM for graphics, so memory bandwidth is graphics performance. This is the one workload where DDR5 shows a large, visible gain — often 20-40% in light gaming and GPU-accelerated preview scrubbing.
  2. Very heavy multitasking. Large virtual machines, big datasets, compiling while ten containers run. The dual sub-channel design earns its keep here.
  3. Future headroom. A DDR5 platform will stay current longer. If you keep laptops for six years rather than three, that is a real consideration.

Where it does not win meaningfully: Word, Excel, Tally, Chrome with twenty tabs, Zoom, Photoshop on normal-sized files, VS Code, accounting software, college assignments. In that entire list, going from DDR4-3200 to DDR5-4800 typically buys single-digit percentage improvements you will not notice.

What matters more than DDR4 vs DDR5?

Three things, all of them cheaper to fix:

  • Capacity beats generation. 16GB of DDR4 will beat 8GB of DDR5 in every real workload, every time. If you have a budget choice, buy the extra capacity.
  • Dual channel beats speed. Two 8GB sticks are meaningfully faster than one 16GB stick, especially on integrated graphics, because the memory controller can talk to both at once. Always check whether a laptop is running one stick or two.
  • An SSD beats everything. If you are still choosing between a faster RAM standard and moving from a hard disk to an SSD, the SSD wins by a distance that is not close.

Who should NOT buy a DDR4 laptop

Buy DDR5, and buy new, if any of these describe you:

  • You game seriously on integrated graphics. This is the clearest case. Memory bandwidth is your frame rate.
  • You run large local AI models or big virtual machines. You want DDR5 capacity and bandwidth, and probably 32GB or more.
  • You intend to keep this laptop past 2032. Buy the newer platform.
  • You need more than 64GB. DDR5 SODIMMs reach capacities DDR4 laptops cannot.

For everyone else — and in India that is most students, freelancers, accountants, WFH professionals and small offices — a well-specified DDR4 business laptop in 2026 is the better use of money, and the memory shortage has made that more true this year, not less.

Frequently asked questions

Is DDR5 twice as fast as DDR4?

On the specification sheet the data rate roughly doubles, from 3200 MT/s to around 6400 MT/s. In real application performance the difference is usually 5-10% for everyday work, and 20-40% only for tasks that lean on integrated graphics. Bandwidth on paper and speed in practice are different things.

Can I upgrade my DDR4 laptop to DDR5?

No. The slot, the pin count and the memory controller inside the CPU are all DDR4-specific. Upgrading to DDR5 means a new laptop, not a new module.

Is DDR4 discontinued in 2026?

DDR4 is still manufactured and still widely sold, though production has been shifting toward DDR5 and that has pushed DDR4 prices up too. Modules for laptops remain easy to buy in India.

How do I check which RAM my laptop has?

On Windows, open Task Manager, go to the Performance tab and click Memory. The panel shows the type (DDR4 or DDR5), the speed in MT/s, the number of slots used and how many are free. It takes about ten seconds.

Should I buy 8GB DDR5 or 16GB DDR4?

16GB DDR4, for almost any real workload. Capacity is the constraint you feel every day; generation is the one you read on a sticker.

Does DDR5 improve battery life?

Slightly, in theory — 1.1V against 1.2V. In practice the on-module power management chip consumes some of that saving back, and screen and CPU dominate laptop battery life anyway. Do not choose a laptop on this basis.
