Short answer: Most Indian students do not need a MacBook — but if you do, buy Apple Silicon, not a cheap Intel one. The Apple MacBook Air 2024 13.6-inch (M3, 8GB, 256GB) Unboxed is ₹74,990 on NewAsNew, 35% off its ₹1,14,990 MRP, and will stay supported through a four-year degree. Design, film, music and iOS students benefit. Commerce, CA and most engineering students are better served by a ₹22,490 Dell Latitude 7490 running Windows.

Does your course actually need macOS?

Start here, because it decides everything, and no amount of budget planning fixes a wrong answer.

Course Software reality Honest recommendation
B.Com, CA, CS, CMA Tally Prime, GST utilities, Excel-heavy work — Windows-first ecosystem Windows. A MacBook will cost you workarounds every week.
Mechanical, civil, electrical engineering AutoCAD, SolidWorks, ANSYS, MATLAB toolboxes — mostly Windows-bound Windows, and check your department’s exact list before you buy anything.
CSE, IT, data science Cross-platform. macOS is a Unix system, which helps; Windows with WSL works too Either. Prioritise 16GB over the logo.
Design, animation, film, photography Adobe suite runs on both; Final Cut and Logic are macOS only; studios and colleges skew Mac MacBook, if the budget genuinely exists.
Music production Logic Pro is macOS only; Core Audio latency is a real advantage MacBook.
iOS or app development Xcode requires macOS. No workaround. MacBook, mandatory.
Arts, humanities, law, medicine, MBA Documents, browsing, video calls, PDFs, presentations Any well-built laptop. Spend less and spend it on books.

If you do need a Mac, which one should a student buy?

Apple MacBook Air 2024 13.6-inch M3 Unboxed at ₹74,990, 35% off ₹1,14,990 — best refurbished MacBook for Indian students

The Apple MacBook Air 2024 13.6-inch M3, 8GB/256GB, Unboxed at ₹74,990 (35% off ₹1,14,990) is the right MacBook for a student, and the reasons are all practical rather than aspirational.

It weighs about 1.24 kg, so it lives in a backpack all day. It is fanless, so it is silent in a library. It runs 9–13 hours in real mixed use, which means you can leave the charger at home — a genuine win in colleges where working sockets are a competitive sport.

Most importantly, a 2024 machine bought in 2026 will still be receiving macOS updates when you graduate in 2029 or 2030. A laptop that dies on the software side in your final year, mid-project, is the most expensive laptop you can buy.

Unboxed matters here too: a like-new machine with negligible battery cycles, not a restored one, for ₹40,000 less than MRP. If the grades still confuse you, our Unboxed vs Grade A decision framework settles it.

What about the ₹41,990 MacBook Pro — is that a smart student buy?

It is a tempting number, and for a small group of students it is the right call.

The Apple MacBook Pro 16-inch A2141 with Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD and a Radeon Pro 5300M at ₹41,990 (79% off ₹1,99,900) gives you macOS, twice the memory and twice the storage of the Air, a 16-inch screen and dedicated graphics — for ₹33,000 less.

Here is the honest catch. Apple has said macOS Tahoe is the last macOS release that supports Intel Macs. After that, expect security updates for a couple of years and then nothing, while app makers steadily move to Apple Silicon-only builds. For a student in the final year of a course, or someone doing a two-year Master’s who needs macOS and 16GB on a small budget, that timeline is fine. For a first-year undergraduate it is not.

Two other MacBook Pros in our catalogue — a 16-inch Intel Core i9 with 32GB RAM and a 16-inch M1 Pro — are out of stock and not orderable. We will not take money for stock we do not hold. The full timeline argument is in Intel MacBook vs Apple Silicon: what a refurbished buyer should choose in 2026.

The ₹22,490 question every student should ask

Honest picks for this guide from NewAsNew — Apple MacBook Air 2024 13.6-Inch at ₹74,990, Apple MacBook Pro 16-Inch A2141 at ₹41,990, Dell Latitude 7490 at ₹22,490

What could you do with the ₹52,500 you would save by not buying the Air?

A Dell Latitude 7490 Core i5 8th Gen at ₹22,490 (75% off ₹88,999) handles every non-specialist course in India: Office, browsing with plenty of tabs, Zoom and Meet, PDFs, coursework, light Photoshop. It is an ex-corporate ultrabook with a metal-reinforced body, a properly good keyboard and cheap service parts in every Indian city.

Need newer silicon and better battery? The HP EliteBook 840 G8 Core i5 11th Gen at ₹34,990 (61% off ₹1,29,999) is Windows 11 eligible, lighter, and has upgradable RAM and SSD — so you can add memory in your second year for a few thousand rupees instead of buying a new laptop.

That upgradability is something no MacBook offers at any price. Our post on upgrading RAM and SSD yourself versus buying a higher-spec machine works through the maths.

Budget, EMI and what parents should know

Machine Price Roughly per month over 12 months Best for
Dell Latitude 7490, Core i5 8th Gen ₹22,490 About ₹1,875 Any general course, first laptop, tight budget
HP EliteBook 840 G8, Core i5 11th Gen ₹34,990 About ₹2,915 Four-year degree on Windows, upgrade headroom
MacBook Pro 16″ Intel Core i7, 16GB/512GB ₹41,990 About ₹3,500 Short course needing macOS, 16GB and a big screen
MacBook Air 2024 M3, 8GB/256GB (Unboxed) ₹74,990 About ₹6,250 Design, film, music, iOS development, long degrees

Those monthly figures are simple division before any bank charges — they are not an offer. Which cards give genuine no-cost EMI and which quietly add interest is covered in refurbished laptop EMI in India explained.

One more thing for parents: every order carries a GST invoice, a written warranty and 7-day returns. If a seller cannot give you all three, the price is not the bargain it looks like. See the GST invoice explainer.

Who should NOT buy a MacBook as a student

Not every product deserves to be sold. Please do not buy one if:

Your course software is Windows-only. Tally, most CA utilities, AutoCAD and SolidWorks workflows, many college lab tools and exam portals. Check your department’s list first. A MacBook that cannot run your assignments is a very expensive notebook.

You are buying it for how it looks in class. We would rather lose this sale. ₹52,500 saved is a laptop plus a phone plus a year of internet, or your entire semester fee at many colleges.

Your family is stretching to afford it. A ₹22,490 Latitude 7490 will get you through your degree. Stretching onto a long EMI for a laptop is a bad financial habit to start adult life with.

You need 16GB but can only afford the 8GB Air. Memory is soldered on Apple Silicon — you can never add more. For heavy multitasking, buy 16GB in Windows instead. Our RAM guide is honest about which workloads truly need it.

You are hard on your things. Hostel life is rough on laptops, and out-of-warranty Apple repairs in India can cost more than a whole Grade A business laptop. A Latitude or EliteBook is cheap to fix anywhere.

You game between classes. Neither the Air nor the Intel Pro is a gaming machine.

You are a first-year student eyeing the Intel MacBook Pro. The platform will be out of macOS support before your degree ends. Either buy Apple Silicon or buy Windows — do not buy a machine with a shorter life than your course.

Frequently asked questions

Is a refurbished MacBook a good idea for an Indian student?

If your course genuinely needs macOS, yes — an Unboxed Apple Silicon MacBook Air at ₹74,990 instead of ₹1,14,990 MRP is the cheapest sensible way in. If your course does not need macOS, a ₹22,490 Grade A business laptop is the better student buy.

Is 8GB RAM enough for a student MacBook?

For coursework, browsing, Office, Canva, video calls and light photo editing, yes. For 4K video editing, big Photoshop files, Android emulators or Docker, no — and you cannot upgrade it later.

Is 256GB storage enough for four years of college?

Usually, if you keep files in Google Drive or OneDrive. If you shoot video, add a 1TB external SSD rather than paying Apple’s internal storage prices. See 256GB vs 512GB vs 1TB.

Can I run Tally on a MacBook?

Not natively in the way most Indian commerce courses expect. Workarounds exist through virtual machines, but they are fragile and slow. If Tally is part of your syllabus, buy Windows.

Which lasts longer — a MacBook or a refurbished business laptop?

Apple Silicon MacBooks last longest on software support. Dell Latitude and HP EliteBook business laptops often last longest physically and are far cheaper to repair. Both beat a cheap new plastic consumer laptop. Read why corporate laptops are the best refurbished laptops.

Do you give a student discount?

We do not run fake student pricing. Our prices are already 35% to 79% below MRP and we do not inflate an MRP to create a discount. If a seller offers a large student discount on top of an already discounted price, check what the original price really was — here is how to spot a fake discount.

What should I check on delivery?

Battery cycle count and condition, screen for marks, keyboard and trackpad, every port, Wi-Fi, speakers, and that no Apple ID or company account remains. You have 7 days to return it — use them properly. Our returns process explains the steps.

Should I wait for festive-season offers?

MacBooks are among the least discounted items in Indian sales, and refurbished prices barely move because they are already below MRP. If you need a laptop for a semester that has already started, buy now. Background: festive season 2026 laptop buying guide.
