Short answer: In 2026, 8GB is the bare floor for study and light office work, 16GB is the sensible default for anyone who works on a laptop daily, and 32GB is only for video editing, large virtual machines or big datasets. Because DDR5 module prices roughly doubled this year, buying the right amount up front matters more than it used to. A 16GB Grade A Certified HP EliteBook 840 G8 at Rs 32,990 is the honest sweet spot for most Indian buyers.

What does RAM actually do?
RAM is your desk. Storage is your cupboard. The processor is you. A bigger desk means more things open at once without constantly putting files back in the cupboard and fetching them again. When you run out of desk, Windows starts using the SSD as overflow — that is called paging, and it is the exact moment a laptop starts feeling slow even though nothing is broken.
More RAM does not make anything faster. It stops things from becoming slower. That distinction is why people are often disappointed by a RAM upgrade and why they are always relieved by one.
How much do you need, by what you actually do?
| You | Buy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| School or college student, documents, browsing, classes, YouTube | 8GB | Enough today. Insist on a free SODIMM slot so you can add later. |
| Office, WFH, Tally, Excel, Teams, 20+ Chrome tabs | 16GB | The default. Excel with large sheets plus Teams plus a browser will exceed 8GB. |
| Designer, Photoshop, Illustrator, Figma, light video | 16GB minimum, 32GB comfortable | Creative apps cache aggressively in RAM. |
| Developer, Docker, virtual machines, local databases | 32GB | Each VM or container takes a fixed allocation off the top. |
| 4K video editing, 3D, large datasets, local AI models | 32GB or more | This is the only tier where more RAM buys visible speed. |
| CA / accounting practice, multiple client files | 16GB | Tally is light; the browser and PDF stack around it is not. |
Is 8GB still enough in 2026?
For a specific and shrinking set of uses, yes. A student writing assignments with ten tabs open on Windows 11 will be fine on 8GB. Add Teams, a PDF reader, Spotify and a second browser profile and it will not be.
The honest position is this: 8GB is not a mistake if it is what your budget allows, but it is only a good buy if the laptop has a free memory slot. Buying an 8GB laptop with soldered memory in 2026 is buying a machine you cannot rescue, at a moment when the rescue part has doubled in price. Business-series laptops — Dell Latitude, HP EliteBook, Lenovo ThinkPad — almost always have accessible SODIMM slots. That is a large part of why we stock them.
Does the 2026 memory shortage change the answer?
Yes, in one direction: buy the capacity you need now rather than planning to add it later. Industry trackers reported DDR5 consumer prices up roughly 110% in the first quarter of 2026 and DRAM contract prices up more than 100% over the year, driven by AI data centre demand. The upgrade module is precisely the thing that got expensive.
Refurbished business laptops sit slightly outside that pressure, because the memory in them was bought years ago. That is a real advantage, and it is the reason the value gap widened this year.
How do I check what I have?
Windows 11: Ctrl+Shift+Esc for Task Manager, Performance tab, Memory. It shows total capacity, speed in MT/s, and Slots used. If it reads 1 of 2, you have a free slot. If it reads 2 of 2 with 4GB each, an upgrade means replacing both sticks, not adding one.
Also watch the In use figure while you work normally for an hour. If it sits above 80% of total, you are short of RAM and it is costing you speed every day.
Who should NOT buy 16GB
- Anyone still on a mechanical hard disk. Move to an SSD first. It is a bigger improvement than doubling RAM, and usually cheaper.
- Students on a hard budget. 8GB with a free slot plus a bigger SSD is a better Rs 22,000 laptop than 16GB with a cramped 128GB drive.
- Anyone buying a MacBook. Apple unified memory behaves differently and is not upgradeable at all. Choose the configuration at purchase and do not compare the number directly against a Windows laptop.
- Anyone who needs 32GB. If you run virtual machines or edit 4K, do not settle for 16GB and plan to upgrade. In 2026 that plan is expensive.

Frequently asked questions
Is 8GB RAM enough for Windows 11 in 2026?
It runs Windows 11 comfortably for light use — documents, browsing, video calls. It becomes tight once you add a communication app, a PDF stack and many tabs at the same time. Buy 8GB only if the laptop has a free memory slot.
Is 16GB enough for programming?
For most web, mobile and application development, yes. Once you run several Docker containers, a local database and an emulator at the same time, move to 32GB.
Can I add RAM to a refurbished laptop?
On business-series machines like the Dell Latitude and HP EliteBook, usually yes — they have accessible SODIMM slots. On thin consumer ultrabooks and all Apple silicon MacBooks, no. We record the slot configuration during our 50-point check, so ask us before you buy.
Does more RAM improve battery life?
Marginally, and indirectly. A laptop that is not constantly paging to the SSD does slightly less work. The effect is small compared with screen brightness and CPU load.
Is 32GB overkill for a student?
Almost always yes. Unless you are doing 3D rendering, machine learning or serious video work as part of your course, that money is far better spent on a larger SSD or a better screen.
What happens if I run out of RAM?
Windows moves inactive data to the page file on your SSD. Nothing crashes, but everything gets slower, apps take longer to switch, and your SSD does more write cycles than it needs to.
